The Boilermaker
 by dougie
To all those hard working tradesmen out there
who are under-appreciated and often abused.

how I love to be a boilermaker
   tall and straight and hard
  up before the sparrows fart
tad before 5 am and never later

weetbix down run for the bus
   trundle down the road
punch me card, greet the boss
polish me specs and make no fuss

whoops soon the noise is starting
grab me box of ear plugs
spit on each and stick them in
soon be deaf only to see talking

someone nearby is making a din
  grinder howling
  spewing sparks
hot debri flying try to not let it in

steel cap boots save me toe now
  steel falls hard but
  bounces over there
no compo this time..wipe me brow

swing the hammer hard make a crunch
  dent the steel deep
  have another try
getting tired nearly time for a lunch

grab a quick sandwich and a coffee
  half an hour goes quick
the boss will soon be looking
back to work and welding its to be

grab the handpiece and a welding rod
  get a shock which makes
  my toes go curly
strike an arc-my god that spark is hot

endure the afternoon so very long
  the boss is watching
  have to keep working
getting weary...god the day is long

knock off comes ..the sparrows say
  comeon mate lets roost
  catch the bus again
think of home ..my sweetheart wife

up the road smell the roast cooking
  she does a great job
  looks after me well
she asks 'are you working sunday?'
