The Ferry Ride

the sea was reflecting the blue sky dimmer
Waiheke was on the beam pretty to take
gulls headed for land with an eye for dinner
you sat looking back at the foaming wake
the ferry ride from Pakatoa did it for me
flashed your green eyes in my direction
and I fell overboard ........in love
Maraetai in the twilight far off the shorty
the cool west breeze cut through the clew
the skipper came by said Auckland in forty
I moved a little closer to be nearer to you
porpoise leapt by the bow an omen to me
Brown's island deserted came slipping past
Te Kotuku's aft pipes kept burbling quietly
I gently took your hand and held it fast
into the port leads flashing lights ahead
bright sparkling city lights quite an array
faint hum of cars and buses as they sped
your fingers gripped mine in a gentle way
dockside soon came looming from the dark
Te Kotuku white heron ended her journey
we left her sadly a love song in our hearts
and began a lovers journey to eternity
